Application
Step 1: Prep
Prep the hair by spraying Purify & Revive PRIME Demineralizing Spray generously throughout the hair, combing through for even distribution and allowing to sit for 3 minutes (no rinsing or shampoo required). This will diminish any hard water minerals prior to any chemical service.
Pro Tip
Minerals are found in 85% of household water which can cause lightener to puff and swell or color to take inaccurately.
Step 2: Sectioning
Create a Face Frame and Hairline Halo section by taking a parting 1-2” back from the center of the forehead all the way around the hairline. Twist the rest of the hair into a knot and clip it up and out of your way.
Pro Tip
Determine the width of your Face Frame based on the thickness and density of the hair.
Step 3: Lightening
Go in with your favorite lived-in blonding technique whether that be a “tease and stitch” method or a hand-painted balayage method—the goal is to create dimension in the hair with a heavy Face Frame concentration of blonding. Starting in the nape, utilize back-to-back teased micro stitches (- – – – -) for the first two sections in the Hairline Halo moving into an alternating teased slice (_______) and teased micro stitch (- – – – -) technique leaving a small amount of hair left out in between. In the Back Crown area above the occipital bone, with V-shaped sectioning take zig zag partings every 1-2” utilizing teased macro stitches (___ ___ ___) to cover more ground quickly, creating more impact. Resume the same pattern for the Hairline Halo in the sides and Face Frame that you used in the nape area. Finally, in the Top Crown, resume the alternating teased slice (_______) and teased micro stitch (- – – – -) method.
Pro Tip
When you are working with thick hair, you can start with Zero Lift Creme Developer in the Hairline Halo, increase to 10 Volume Creme Developer in the back Crown and increase again to 20 Volume Creme Developer as you move into the Top Crown so all of the lightening will process at the same time.
Process the lightener at room temperature until you reach a Level 8-9 in the Face Frame and Hairline Halo, and a Level 7 in the Top Crown. Shampoo with Color Protect Cleanse, rinse and dry the hair completely.
Step 4: Sectioning for Color Melt
On dry hair, create the same Face Frame and Hairline Halo sectioning as you did for the pre-lightening step.
Step 5: Color Application – Face Frame and Hairline Halo
Apply Formula 1 as a base color melted into Formula 3 blending the transition points well.
Pro Tip
Drag the base color down further in the back and just tap it towards the front for a brighter face frame.
Step 6: Color Application – Crown and Top
Taking zig zag 1-2” V-shaped partings, alternate applying Formula 1 melted into Formula 2 and Formula 1 melted into Formula 3 to the remaining hair. Continue with this pattern ending with Formula 1 melted into Formula 2 on top.
Pro Tip
For a more moody finish in this section, extend the base color down further and use less mids/ends color.
Process 30 minutes at room temperature, then Cleanse and Condition with PRAVANA’s Color Protect Regimen. Style as desired.
