The Trend

Summer had its moment in lavender. From airy lilacs to soft violet pastels, light purple shades were everywhere and as we explored in VIVIDS In Bloom, these delicate shades became one of the season’s standout color stories. But as August winds down and fall approaches, we’re seeing those pastels evolve rather than disappear. Enter Amethyst Alchemy: a rich spectrum of purple hair colors that moves seamlessly from the softest smoky lavender to saturated plum, blackberry, violet, and amethyst. It’s not about leaving summer behind overnight. It’s about taking a shade clients already love and giving it a little more depth, richness, and seasonal personality. We’ve noticed more stylists and clients reaching for this family of color, and the timing makes sense. Purple has always had range. It can be soft or dramatic, cool or warm, subtle or unapologetically vibrant. And unlike some seasonal color trends that seem to belong to one very specific complexion or aesthetic, there’s a purple for just about everyone.

The most exciting part? The transition doesn’t have to happen all at once. A client who’s been living their best lavender life can take a first step into fall with a silvery Smokey Lavender, then explore deeper plum or violet as the season progresses. Think of it less as a color change and more as a color evolution.

Why It Resonates

Purple is a power color. Historically associated with creativity, individuality, luxury, and self-expression, it has a way of making a statement without always demanding the intensity of a red or the commitment of a dramatically dark shade. That versatility is part of its appeal—and one reason purple continues to find its way back into the color conversation.

For clients, purple offers an opportunity to personalize their look. A whisper of lavender can feel ethereal and understated, while a saturated amethyst can become the ultimate statement accessory. Deeper plums and blackberries can read almost brunette in certain lighting, revealing their violet personality when the light hits just right.

For colorists, the purple family offers an exciting playground. The same general color family can be approached through demi-permanent color, permanent color, semi-permanent direct dyes, or combinations that create different levels of saturation, dimension, longevity, and vibrancy.

And because the season is still transitioning, there’s no need to rush directly from pastel to deep jewel tones right away. In fact, one of the most beautiful things about this trend is the opportunity to build on what is already there vs. a major color correction—time savings for you and more budget-friendly for your client.

Who It’s For

The Pastel Lover: For the client who isn’t ready to say goodbye to summer lavender, Smokey Lavender is the perfect first step. It’s lighter, cooler, and more sophisticated while still preserving the airy quality of a pastel.

The Subtle Color Explorer: A rich plum created with permanent color can introduce purple in a polished, dimensional way without looking overtly like fashion color. It’s an easy choice for someone who wants to experiment while keeping their overall look wearable.

The Fashion Color Fan: For clients who want their purple to be seen, VIVIDS opens the door to brighter, more saturated violets, plums, and amethysts with serious visual impact.

The In-Between: Not every client wants to choose between traditional permanent color and vibrant direct dyes. PRAVANA ChromaSilk VIVIDS Everlasting offers another option, creating rich, vibrant results in a permanent color system.

Whether the goal is subtle dimension or a full-on transformation, the purple family has plenty of room to play.

The Foundation

As with any fashion color service, the starting canvas matters. A soft silvery lavender requires a very different foundation than a rich plum or a saturated amethyst. The level of lift, the underlying pigment remaining in the hair, and the desired final depth all influence the finished result.

When PRAVANA launched ChromaSilk Express Tones, they coined the term “tone to set the tone” which also translates to PRAVANA ChromaSilk Platinum Toner. The approach means creating a balanced foundation before applying the final fashion shade, allowing the finished color to showcase the desired tone and clarity. For Smokey Lavender in particular, the canvas is an important part of the process. Here, you can see how PRAVANA Lead Artistic Educator Tiffany Summers and her salon partner Leanna Quevedo first pre-lightened the hair to Level 10, then applied ChromaSilk Platinum Toner Lilac to well-towel dried hair for 10 minutes (after removing the lightener), resulting in a clean lilac canvas needed to optimize the final result.

The bonus: As the custom VIVIDS shade fades, the hair reveals pretty lavender and silver tones rather than unwanted warmth, eventually returning to a cool blonde. And if the client decides they’re ready for something completely different at their next appointment, a balanced canvas gives the colorist more flexibility when creating the next look.

The goal isn’t simply to lift hair as light as possible; it’s to create the right starting point for the color you want to see.

The Fall Color Menu

1. Smokey Lavender: The softest step from summer pastel into fall.
Not ready to let go of summer just yet? Take airy violet pastels into fall with Smokey Lavender—a softer evolution of summer’s favorite shade. By layering cool, silvery tones over a delicate lavender base, this look creates a sophisticated metallic finish that feels fresh for the season while maintaining the light, ethereal quality clients love. It’s the perfect transition shade for guests who want to deepen their pastel without moving into a dramatically darker color.

2. Velvet Plum: Rich, dimensional plum with natural-looking depth.
For clients who want a more subtle approach to purple, look no further than Velvet Plum. PRAVANA ChromaSilk Crème Hair Color creates a naturally inspired, glossy plum shade with beautiful depth and sophistication all on its own. Applied over a natural Level 4/5 canvas, this look demonstrates how permanent color can bring purple into the equation while maintaining a polished, dimensional finish. It’s an ideal option for guests who want to explore the purple family while keeping their color wearable and beautifully refined.

3. Midnight Blackberry: Deep brunette-inspired color with a hidden violet glow.
Love the depth of a rich brunette-inspired shade but want a little more personality? Midnight Blackberry delivers the perfect dose of mystery and dimension. Starting with the beautiful depth of PRAVANA ChromaSilk Deep Chroma 4.77, adding VIVIDS Everlasting Violet Reign creates a glossy blackberry finish with a hidden pop of violet that reveals itself beautifully in different lighting.

4. Royal Violet: Rich permanent color with vibrant fashion personality.
Prefer the richness of permanent color but still want vibrant fashion impact? Royal Violet creates that perfect balance between sophistication and expression. Using PRAVANA ChromaSilk VIVIDS Everlasting, colorists can create a rich, dimensional violet with the staying power of permanent hair color while bridging the gap between traditional permanent shades and the bold personality of fashion color. The finished look feels polished enough for everyday wear while still delivering the expressive personality that makes purple so much fun.

5. Jewel-Toned Amethyst: Bold, saturated purple that makes a statement.
Ready to dive in head first—no pun intended—into a jewel-toned transformation? Amethyst is the ultimate fall fashion color statement. For clients craving bold, vibrant purple with incredible saturation and shine, PRAVANA ChromaSilk VIVIDS delivers the intensity needed to create eye-catching plum and amethyst shades that command attention.

Colorist’s Corner

Purple is beautiful—but it can also be quirky. Here are the top three challenges with formulation considerations to keep in your back pocket when creating and maintaining violet, plum, and amethyst shades:

  • Purple Looking Too Red? At deeper levels, underlying pigment can influence the finished result or when warmth remains from previous lightening. If a violet formula is reading more red-violet than intended, adding a .11 Intense Ash shade with a double green base can help neutralize the red and allow the violet to shine through.
  • Want VIVIDS Violet to Fade Violet? Cooler violet shades like VIVIDS Violet can leave slight blue as they fade, especially if lightened beyond the recommended Level 7. The instinct is to add VIVIDS Red, but this can give you more of a drab result. For vibrant shades, pink and blue create a bright violet. Adding a little VIVIDS Magenta to your formula to balance the tone and encourage the color to fade into softer violet tones.
  • Looking for a Smokier Purple? Not every purple needs to be bright and vibrant. For smokier violets and plums, first keep the starting palette at a Level 7/8 to preserve more depth in the canvas. Then, incorporate VIVIDS Black (adding one drop at a time and mixing thoroughly) to deepen, darken, or dim a shade, creating a moodier result.

These small adjustments can make a big difference when customizing purple for the individual client—and that’s where the real alchemy happens.

The Takeaway

The beauty of purple for fall isn’t that there’s one perfect shade. It’s that there’s an entire spectrum to explore. As summer fades into fall, your client’s color doesn’t have to start over. Sometimes, the best next shade is already hiding in the one they’re wearing.

For clients coming out of the freedom of an effortless summer, Smokey Lavender offers an easy first step: a little deeper, a little smokier, and a little more seasonal without abandoning the lightness they loved. From there, the journey can evolve into a rich Velvet Plum, a mysterious Midnight Blackberry, a vibrant Royal Violet, or an all-in, bright Jewel-Toned Amethyst.

And that’s what makes Amethyst Alchemy more than a single fall hair color trend. It’s a roadmap for color evolution.
